The Negroni is a polite slap. Bitter, red, clean. It doesn’t flirt. It doesn’t apologize. If you like sweet drinks, it’s not going to chase you. That’s the point.
Settle the Ratio (and move on)

Start with the classic:
- 1 oz / 30 ml gin
- 1 oz / 30 ml bitter aperitivo
- 1 oz / 30 ml sweet vermouth
If you want it drier and more “after dark,” try:
- 1.5 oz / 45 ml gin
- 1 oz / 30 ml bitter aperitivo
- 1 oz / 30 ml sweet vermouth
Method: Stir with ice 25–35 seconds. Serve over a large cube.
Garnish: orange peel, expressed.
The Bitter Question (Campari-style vs alternatives)
Bitter aperitivo matters. Some are louder, some softer, some more herbal. Choose the one you actually like—then keep the rest consistent.
9 Variations (by mood)

1) Classic Negroni
Equal parts. Orange peel. Done.
2) Boulevardier
- 1 oz / 30 ml bourbon or rye
- 1 oz / 30 ml bitter aperitivo
- 1 oz / 30 ml sweet vermouth
Stir, large cube, orange peel.
3) Mezcal Negroni (smoke, clean)
Swap gin for mezcal. Keep equal parts. Orange peel.
4) White Negroni (bitter, bright, dangerous)

- 1 oz / 30 ml gin
- 1 oz / 30 ml gentian liqueur (Suze-style)
- 1 oz / 30 ml blanc vermouth or a light aromatized wine
Stir, serve over a cube. Garnish: grapefruit peel.
5) Kingston Negroni (rum with backbone)
Swap gin for a funky Jamaican-style aged rum. Keep equal parts. Orange peel.
6) Coffee Negroni (nightcap energy)
Make a classic Negroni, then add 1 teaspoon cold brew concentrate and stir again briefly. Orange peel.
7) Negroni Sbagliato (adult spritz)
- 1 oz / 30 ml bitter aperitivo
- 1 oz / 30 ml sweet vermouth
- Top with 2–3 oz / 60–90 ml dry sparkling wine
Build over ice in a rocks glass. Orange peel.
8) Americano Nightcap (lighter, still bitter)
- 1.5 oz / 45 ml bitter aperitivo
- 1.5 oz / 45 ml sweet vermouth
Top with club soda. Orange peel.
9) “Black Negroni” (darker, more bitter)
Replace ½ oz (15 ml) of sweet vermouth with a dark amaro (cola/chocolate/coffee notes). Stir, large cube, orange peel.
Garnish Discipline
If the peel is dry, it’s useless. If you don’t express it, you’re missing half the drink.
Last Call

A good Negroni tastes like control. A great Negroni tastes like you meant it.
